mysql 5.0怎样设置默认字符集为中文?my.cnf没用

我用的是Red Hat 9.0自带的Mysql 5.0,他的默认字符集是utf-8的,我设置了my.cnf, 还是没用~

default-character-set = gb2312
datadir=/var/lib/mysql
socket=/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock

不是,我看错了是mysql 4.1.1
我已经解决了,除了设置my.cnf,在数据库连接的时候再设置一次字符集

php.ini 的 default_charset 也设置一下。
