急啊！mysql4.0.24安装出错

我的系统是redhat9。
安装教程http://www.xjtusky.com/article.asp?id=49安装MySQL 4.0.24时，这一步：

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql \ 指定安装目录
--with-client-ldflags=-all-static \
--with-mysqld-ldflags=-all-static \以纯静态方式编译服务端和客户端

时出错，最后的几句出错信息如下：

Starting the mysqld server.  You can test that it is up and running
with the command:
./bin/mysqladmin version
[root@localhost mysql-standard-4.0.24-pc-linux-gnu-i686]# Starting mysqld daemon

不知道是什么原因，我安装REDHAT9的时候没有安装自带的mysql。

望高手急救啊～在网上找了好多都不能解决问题。
